The Maharashtra government has put a temporary stay on the earlier order of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), allowing homoeopathy practitioners to practice modern medicine. The stay came after the Indian Medical Association (IMA) met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday (July 10, 2025).

After the meeting, a notification was issued on Friday (July 11, 2025), mentioning that a committee will be set up to study and make recommendations on the matter to the government within two months.

“The Maharashtra Medical Council is hereby directed to immediately stop the process of registration of homoeopathy practitioners initiated by the Maharashtra Medical Council until further action is taken on the report of the said committee,” stated the Maharashtra government in the notification.

“We showed Mr. Fadnavis the decisions of the Court hearing on the matter so far. He also agrees that this matter is in contempt of Court and orders the committee,” said Santosh Kadam, IMA State President, adding we welcome this step as this is about patient safety and public trust.

IMA decided to hold a 24-hour strike on Friday (July 11, 2025), followed by a rally in Mumbai on July 14. However, it was halted after assurances from CM Devendra Fadnavis. The Maharashtra Senior Resident Doctors Association (MSRDA) members also met Opposition leader Ambadas Danve, asking to raise the issue in the ongoing Maharashtra Assembly monsoon session.

IMA, MSRDA, and Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) opposed the MMC’s decision to register the homoeopathic doctors having Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) to prescribe allopathic medicines. In the letter submitted to the government on July 8, IMA said, “If homoeopathic medical practitioners are allowed to practice in modern medicine, it may pose a threat to the health of the people and the lives of the patients.”

Several hospitals associated with MARD, including Nair Hospital, resident doctors held a silent protest on 11th July 2025 against the recent decision by the MMC. “As a mark of protest, doctors wore black ribbons on their left arms while continuing their duties in the OPD, wards, and operation theatres,” NAIR Mard president Dr. Digvijay Jadhav said in the statement.
