When discussing breast cancer, the conversation often focuses on women. While breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, it may surprise many to learn that it also affects men. According to Dr Pragya Shukla, Head of Clinical Oncology at the Delhi State Cancer Institute, “Breast cancer cases in men range from 1% to 3%, but this rate is gradually increasing.”

Speaking to Local18, Dr Shukla highlighted the importance of early detection. She advised that if men notice any lump in the breast, they should promptly consult an oncologist. She explained that breast lumps in men are typically painless, making it essential not to overlook them, as they can be early signs of cancer.

She also noted that more male patients with breast cancer are visiting OPDs, and now, rather than removing the entire breast, doctors often excise only the cancerous area during surgery.

Causes Of Breast Cancer Among Men

Dr Shukla mentioned that men should be mindful of any changes in the breast and seek medical attention if they notice a lump or discharge from the nipple. Exposure to radiation, elevated estrogen levels, and excessive alcohol consumption increase cancer risk.

Alcohol can raise estrogen levels, which encourages the growth of both healthy and cancerous breast cells, potentially leading to cancer. Men with a family history of cancer should also remain vigilant.
