Meta AI is rolling out in over a dozen countries this week, which does not include India, but soon you do AI magic on the messaging app.

WhatsApp users can finally try out Meta’s AI-powered features in select countries from this week onwards. The messaging app has been testing the Meta AI chatbot with people in markets like India, but now, Meta has confirmed that WhatsApp can benefit from the power of AI and its new tools that give the platform another dimension.

WhatsApp is powered by the new Meta AI chatbot built with the Llama 3 AI model by the company, announced this week. “You can use Meta AI on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger to get things done, learn, create and connect with the things that matter to you,” Meta said in its post here. The company claims that the new Llama model is smarter, faster and more fun but also gives you features like AI image generator, get your queries answered and more on your mobile device.

Meta AI is coming to more countries outside of the US from this week onwards such as Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Interestingly, India is not part of the first roster from Meta, even though many people in the region have got access to the Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp and talked about its purpose, use case and efficacy.

The fact that Meta has built the AI model means it was obvious that WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook will be getting AI goodness.

WhatsApp users will be specifically keeping a close on the AI evolution which gives them all the popular features in one app. Want to create an image using text prompts, Meta AI will do it. Want a recipe for your favourite cuisine? Meta AI will get that for you. Or even make a simple search for content that you are curious about.

India caters to over 400 million WhatsApp users and it is likely that Meta feels that it wants the AI model to be polished and tweaked to make it a reliable tool for millions in the years to come. Having said that, Meta is the parent company of Facebook which does not have a good track record with data and AI brings those old wounds back into the equation, so we’re hoping the AI regulations are handled in a better way by the company.
