The man open-fired at the aggressive co-passenger after the latter charged at him first with a sharp object and then a gun.
Bullets flew inside a crowded compartment of a New York City metro train as it approached a Brooklyn station following a heated altercation between two men in their thirties. The New York City Police department on Thursday in a press conference said that one man, 36, is in critical condition.
The shooting took place after a 32-year-old man boarded a train at the Nostrand Avenue station at about 4:45 pm (local time). The man, after he got on the train, was approached by a 36-year-old man, with whom later on an altercation broke out.
Michael Kemper, New York City Police Department’s chief of transit, said that witnesses and other passengers aboard the train described the 36-year-old man as “being aggressive and provocative towards the 32-year-old that just got on”.
He said that both men engaged in a verbal altercation before it quickly became physical. He said the older man approached the younger man with “either a knife or a razor blade” moments after he boarded and then put down the object.
The verbal exchange continued before the 36-year-old man “removed a firearm from his jacket” and started moving towards the younger man “in a menacing way”, Kemper said.
Moments later the altercation became visible again.
Police said that moments later the younger man “removed” the gun from the 36-year-old and fired multiple shots at him as the train was pulling into the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station.
The police official said that he thinks the two men were total strangers and one or two dozen passengers were inside the train and several filmed the entire incident.
He said police officers inside the police station heard the gunshots and were able to respond quickly. The 36-year-old was transported to a hospital and was in critical condition and undergoing surgery.
He said it is not yet determined if charges will be brought against the 32-year-old or his actions will be deemed as acts of self-defence. The younger man was apprehended on the scene and police interviewed him.
