When hip-hop artist Th3 Saint (aka Steven Kapoor) and singer-songwriter/producer The Basement Alien (aka Ashish Konwar) kick off their song “Porisoy” with the strum of a ukulele, you know you’re in for something unconventional.
Hailing from Dibrugarh, Assam, the two artists—who went to the same school—have released the Assamese-Hindi track as an introduction to their crew, Deadly Poetic. The music video, shot in the lush forests of Northeast India, is directed, edited, and filmed by Royal. “Porisoy,” meaning “introduction” in Assamese, opens with The Basement Alien playing a soothing ukulele melody before Th3 Saint delivers autobiographical bars about building confidence and finding his artistic path.
From acknowledging the family struggles to get by to finding comfort and inspiration in the rap of stars like Eminem (Th3 Saint has some clever wordplay in referencing Eminem’s album Recovery in the verses), “Porisoy” offers a fresh flavor to desi hip-hop. The Basement Alien takes over in the hook, singing in wistful Assamese about losing one’s sense of perspective but knowing it can always be found within oneself.
“The song is titled ‘Porisoy’ which means introduction in Assamese. The song is one of a kind as the rap verses are recorded purely just on the melodies of uke layered with guitar. The verses are hard hitting with Saint’s butterflow where he talks about his life experiences,” the artists shared in a statement.
This release marks a new chapter for Deadly Poetic, which also includes rapper Tryble (aka Nilutpal Deori). The crew has gone through a few name changes, previously known as Roaring Microphone and Introvert Society.
“Porisoy” comes on the back of several releases by Th3 Saint, a prolific artist who started the year with “Obvious” and has already gone on to release another solo song, “Shady Saint.” Previous breakout songs include “Man on Mission” and “Skills3t,” both released in 2024.
