The whirlwind romance of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce has been commemorated with a diamond ring. The musician and athlete have announced their engagement after two years of dating.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” Swift and Kelce wrote in a joint post on Instagram. The carousel of photos captured the couple surrounded by flowers and foliage. Kelce proposed with a Kindred Lubeck-designed ring from Artifex Fine Jewelry, housing an old mine brilliant cut. They set the post to “So High School,” the Tortured Poets Department deep cut where she sings, “Are you gonna marry, kiss, or kill me? It’s just a game, but really.” Now she has her answer.
With Kelce, Swift was able to mostly keep their relationship under wraps while they got to know each other, but the Kansas City Chiefs tight end wasn’t shy about his crush. “If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there,” Kelce said on an episode of his New Heights podcast in July. “But I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it.”
Shooting his shot by indulging in the theatrics of the world Swift has created around her music turned out to be the way to her heart. “This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell,” Swift told Time in a rare interview December 2023. “We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other.”
While many believed they were witnessing Kelce and Swift’s first date when she pulled up to the Kansas City Chief’s game against the Chicago Bears in September, the pair were already comfortable settled into their relationship at that point. “By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple,” Swift added. “We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.”
During a recent appearance on Kelce’s New Heights podcast, Swift reflected fondly on how he went about courting her. “This kind of felt more like I was in an Eighties John Hughes movie, and he was standing outside of my window with boom box, just being like, ‘I want to date you,’” she said. “This is sort of what I’ve been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.”
While Swift usually prefers to communicate about her relationships through song, apart from this rare podcast appearance and the Time interview tied to her being named Person of the Year, Kelce has mostly embraced the media storm around them. “Obviously I’ve never dated anyone with that kind of aura about them…. I’ve never dealt with it,” he told the Wall Street Journal magazine. “But at the same time, I’m not running away from any of it.”
Earlier this month, he told GQ, “Nothing I’ve ever done has been a controlled, organized process. When I say it was so organic, we fell in love just based off the people we were sitting in a room together with. We are two fun-loving people who have the morals to appreciate everyone for who they are. We share all those values. It kind of just took the fuck off.”
Swift is no stranger to being in a public relationship, some of her past boyfriends more accustomed to the limelight than others. In 2023, just before Swift launched the Eras tour, her six-year relationship with the actor Joe Alwyn came to an end. The couple were intensely private, having managed to develop their relationship over the course of nine months before tabloids picked up on it.
But over the years, she’s learned to not care — not about who’s watching, which lyrics are being dissected, or how anyone else feels when it comes to an end. The buzz around her relationship with Kelce has been inescapable since that first game day appearance and neither of them seem to mind much at all.
“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there, and we don’t care,” Swift told Time. “The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
