Shankar Mahadevan receives the Music Legend Award at the 2024 News18 Showsha Reel Awards for his outstanding contribution to music

The highly awaited News18 Showsha Reel Awards made a spectacular return, exceeding expectations with its grandeur and magnificence. Taking place on March 9 in Mumbai, the ceremony delved into the growing collaboration between over-the-top (OTT) platforms and the Hindi film industry.

Shankar Mahadevan won the Music Legend Award for his outstanding contribution to music. Mahadevan’s exceptional skill, combined with his deep love for music, has given rise to classics throughout his nearly three-decade-long career. As a Grammy Award-winning singer, he has garnered multiple accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri and three National Awards for Best Male Playback Singer.

The singer and composer, along with Zakir Hussain, is a part of the fusion band Shakti which won the Grammy Award 2024 for Best Global Music Album for ‘This Moment’. Shakti is a fusion band formed by English guitarist John McLaughlin and legendary percussionist Zakir Hussain.

Chartering his journey

In 2000, Shankar Mahadevan secured his inaugural National Award for Best Playback Singer with his rendition of the song ‘Yenna Solla Pogirai.’ This romantic ballad, featured in the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain starring Ajith Kumar and Tabu, is celebrated as one of the most emotionally resonant and touching tracks.

Shankar Mahadevan profoundly moved millions with his emotive performance of ‘Maa’ from the critically acclaimed film Taare Zameen Par. The song’s poignant lyrics and emotional depth resonated deeply, earning him the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer in recognition of his soul-stirring rendition.

Beyond his vocal prowess, Shankar Mahadevan is a integral member of the composing trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, collectively contributing some of the finest songs to Indian cinema over the past three decades. Their collaboration on the musical album for the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ in 2004 garnered them the National Award for Best Music Director.

Shankar Mahadevan’s latest achievement involves being part of the Grammy-winning team for Best Global Music Album for “This Moment”.
