Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta recently stated that he was reminded of Amitabh Bachchan films from the 1970s while praising Alia Bhatt‘s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ over Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s direction skills.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, the filmmaker shared, “When I saw Gangubai I was like wow. I felt I am watching an Amitabh Bachchan film from the 70s. With her dialogues and the way, the scenes were constructed.”
A scene in which Alia’s character Gangubai sits in the car with her beloved Afsaan served as Sanjay’s evidence for his claim. The way Alia performed the scene while sitting there was recognized by the director. The director remarked that some directors have given up on their hard work, and they are “paying a price” for it.
Speaking on the fate of movies at the box office, Sanjay Gupta stressed that if the filmmakers don’t put their all into their work, the movies won’t be able to make money. Sanjay went on to say that he watched ‘Aatish: Feel The Fire’ (1994), his directorial debut, with his children, who are now discovering his movies.
Recalling his thoughts, the director of ‘Jazbaa’ revealed that he gave every scene in the 1994 film his best. He gave the example of late filmmaker-actor Feroz Khan, who directed Qurbani in 1980. He also applauded the efforts of filmmakers like Mani Ratnam, Mukul Anand, JP Dutta, and Ram Gopal Varma.
On the work front, Sanjay Gupta is busy with the promotions of his upcoming production, ‘Visfot’, along with Fardeen Khan, who plays one of the leads in the movie. Directed by Kookie Gulati, Visfot also stars Riteish Deshmukh in the lead role. It will be released on September 6, 2024.
