The decision comes following a high-level meeting held by the selectors in Mumbai on Monday, where Rohit Sharma’s future as Test captain was discussed in depth. Amid growing concerns over his recent red-ball form, the selectors were reportedly inclined to make a leadership change ahead of the England tour.
Rohit confirmed the development by posting a story on social media, announcing his retirement from Test Cricket.
The BCCI is expected to make an official announcement soon, and discussions are ongoing regarding who will take over the Test captaincy.
After cementing his place in the Test team in 2021, Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy following Virat Kohli’s resignation. He went on to lead India in the World Test Championship Final against Australia for the 2021–2023 cycle and has remained the red-ball skipper since.
Rohit’s struggles with the bat in recent Test matches have been a concern. During the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he managed just 31 runs across five innings at an average of 6.20 and opted out of the final Test. His previous outing in the Test series against New Zealand also saw him average only 15.16. Critics have questioned not just his performance with the bat but also his on-field leadership in crucial moments.
