‘Bajirao Mastani’ had been a dream project for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, for many years before he finally made it happen with Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. The film was a box office hit and also got immense accolades from everyone. Not to mention, the performances of all the actors were hugely appreciated. But here’s recalling the time when Priyanka was asked if she wanted to play the titular role of Mastani, played by Deepika, instead of her own character ‘Kashibai’.For those not in the know, Kashibai was Bajirao’s first wife and then he fell in love with Mastani who became his second wife.
The actress was asked this during an interaction with reporters at an award show. She instantly reacted and said, “Aapne film dekhi hai? Toh main kyun karti? Kashi pasand aayi? Mera ghar dekhna, garden ban gaya hai! (Have you watched the film? Why would I play Mastani? Did you like Kashi? You should have a look in my house, it has become garden).”
Priyanka won a lot of praise for her performance in the movie and her dialogue, “Aap humse hamari zindagi maang lete, hum khushi-khushi de dete, par aapne toh humse hamara guroor hi chheen lia,” continues to be popular till date. There are reels of this particular scene and memes of this dialogue going viral still.
‘Bajirao Mastani’ was initially to be made with Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. However, that could never happen due to the turmoil between both the actors. Aishwarya had spoken about it on ‘Koffee With Karan’ and had said that she was keen to play Mastani but not with the Bajirao that Bhansali had in mind (indirectly hinting at Salman). For years, Bhansali could not find the perfect Bajirao for Aishwarya to play Mastani, other than Salman. Later, Kareena Kapoor Khan was also approached to play Mastani but that did not work out as well.
