NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu, PM Narendra Modi and other leaders on Wednesday expressed grief over the death of legal doyen Fali S Nariman and lamented the loss of the voice of law.
“Among the wisest experts on our Constitution, he was also a globally respected jurist. He served the nation in various roles, including as a member of Rajya Sabha, with equal dedication.His contributions in enriching constitutional practices and strengthening legal system will be remembered for long,” President Murmu said in her message.
In a post on platform X, the PM said: “Fali Nariman Ji was among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals. He devoted his life to making justice accessible to common citizens.”
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said in his message, “His (Nariman’s) legacy and contribution will always serve as a guiding light to the nation at large.”
In his long and illustrious legal career, Nariman argued in several landmark cases, including the famous case of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC), which was struck down by Supreme Court.
Union home minister Amit Shah said, “A trailblazing luminary, Nariman Ji’s profound knowledge of the law and keen intellect served as the guiding light for our judicial system. With his passing, a powerful voice of law fell silent today.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said Nariman’s contributions to legal system are immeasurable. May his legacy continue to inspire generations on the path of making justice accessible to all.”
Law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said his indelible mark on numerous landmark cases before Supreme Court will forever be etched in the annals of legal history.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “His unwavering commitment to his principles remained steadfast and admirable.”
