Meta is changing the AI label but the details are still limited

Meta faces questions about its AI content policy and how other images are labelled. New changes suggest the platform is still learning the trades.

Meta was criticised for labelling all the images with Made by AI tag even if they were just given minor touch ups. The company was forced to comment on the subject after a photographer shared the issue on social media recently. Now, Meta has decided to change the definition of the tag from Made by AI to AI Info for viewers on Instagram and Facebook.

Ideally, Meta is supposed to add these labels for actual images that are created using AI. But the platform was even marking real photos edited using AI tools as Made by AI, which isn’t how it should work. Meta was said to be evaluating its approach and now, the new update means you will not see the Made by AI label for all edited images.

Having said that, the AI Info label doesn’t do much to change the situation as the details are still unexplained, which means people will still have to tap on the label to see what the platform is trying to tell the viewers.

Meta suggests that any form of editing done using these tools is being termed as Made by AI as per the industry standard, which cannot be the right way forward for this system to work.

However, with AI-generated content becoming prominent across the internet and social media, it is vital that Meta and other players in the tech industry find a more sensible way to define and give details about what constitutes as a Made by AI image, and not just because it was edited using one of these free tools.

The AI era needs clarity and labels like these need to be transparent and easily available to the viewers, rather than making them click on a label to view the details. Why not just make it hover-friendly to see the content of the images, which offers less friction.

Everyone accepts that companies like Meta have to keep a check on the quality and presence of AI content on its platforms but wrongful labelling shows that the actual mechanism to detect these images is severely lacking.

The timing is also not apt for the company as it pushes Meta AI into its platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, which has a reach of over billions of users with countries like India also now able to access these tools.
