Ahmedabad-origin fusion/rock band Meghdhanush offer a searing critique of modern society on their latest single, “Dekh Tamasha,” from their upcoming second album, Dareechey.
Enlisting lyricist Alok Ranjan Srivastava, the five-member band brings riffs, thundering drum work, and sing-along portions in between verses about urban development at the cost of the environment, election campaigns that resemble circuses, and news media piling on to the drama. There’s an absurdity in it all, as vocalist Ishrat Kalavant points out, for the poor who are subject to these acts.
The band says in a statement, “‘Dekh Tamasha’ is a raw and thought provoking take on the world around us. It highlights the gap between appearance and reality, questioning false displays of faith and fading values. With sharp satire and powerful rock energy, it urges listeners to look beyond the surface, think for themselves, and act. We hope this track sparks conversations and keeps the spirit of rock alive.”
The music video, directed and edited by Jaymin Modi with cinematography by Swathy Deepak, heightens the chaos with flashes of alarming red and surreal AI-generated visuals. At the end, a person steps out from the television screen, confronting and shaking out of their stupor a passive figure on the couch.
Active since 2009, Meghdhanush released their debut album Miljas in 2017, followed by the EP Folk Rang in 2018. Dareechey—a seven-track album—marks a return after several years of singles, showcasing a more refined and politically charged direction. “Dekh Tamasha” reflects the band’s evolution from their early Gujarati folk-rock roots and viral 2014 tribute to the beloved ’90s TV superhero Shaktimaan. Their take on the theme song earned them millions of views and opened doors to soundtrack work, including “Bhinjaaun” with pop artist Jonita Gandhi for the 2017 Gujarati film Miljaaj.
