How to Make Natural Kajal at Home – A Simple Guide |


Making natural kajal, also known as kohl or surma, at home is a traditional practice that has been used for centuries in various cultures. Natural kajal is believed to be safe for the eyes and can help enhance their appearance by defining and darkening the lash line. Here’s a simple guide on how to make natural kajal at home using common ingredients:
Ingredients:
Sesame oil or ghee: 2 tablespoons
Almonds or almond oil: 4-5 almonds or 1 teaspoon almond oil
Castor oil: 1 teaspoon
A small ceramic or steel bowl
A wick or cotton cloth strip
A matchstick, candle or clay diya flame
Instructions:
Preparation of almond paste:
If you’re using almonds, start by soaking them in water overnight to soften them.The next day, peel off the skin and grind the almonds into a fine paste using a mortar and pestle or a blender.
Alternatively, if you’re using almond oil, skip the soaking and grinding step and proceed to the next step directly.

Mixing ingredients:
Transfer the almond paste or almond oil to a small ceramic or steel bowl.
Add sesame oil or ghee to the almond paste/oil in the bowl. Mix well until you achieve a smooth and consistent texture.
Next, add castor oil to the mixture and blend thoroughly.
Heating the mixture:
Place the bowl containing the mixture over a low flame. If you’re using a candle or diya flame, place the bowl directly above it, ensuring it doesn’t come into contact with the flame.
Heat the mixture gently, stirring continuously to prevent burning or sticking. Continue heating until the mixture thickens and turns dark black in color. This process may take around 10-15 minutes.
Collection of kajal:
Once the mixture reaches the desired consistency and color, remove it from the heat source and allow it to cool slightly.
Take a small cotton cloth strip or a wick and dip it into the warm kajal mixture, ensuring it absorbs the liquid.
Carefully roll the soaked cloth strip or wick between your thumb and forefinger to remove any excess liquid.

Setting the kajal:
Now, light a matchstick or candle flame and hold the tip of the soaked cloth strip or wick close to the flame.
Allow the flame to burn the soaked cloth strip or wick until it starts to smolder and produce smoke.
Hold the smoldering cloth strip or wick over the bowl to collect the soot or kajal residue that accumulates as a result of the burning process.

How to store:
Once you’ve collected a sufficient amount of kajal, carefully transfer it to a small airtight container or a traditional kajal pot for storage. Allow the kajal to cool completely before sealing the container.
