VARANASI: Anjuman Intezamia Masajid (AIM) has reaffirmed its commitment to continue efforts “until the last breath” for the safety and preservation of Gyanvapi mosque, while expressing disappointment over the Varanasi district judge’s ruling permitting puja in its basement.
AIM, which manages the mosque, pledged this in a communique on Saturday evening. Criticising the district judge’s decision, Mufti-e-Banaras and AIM secretary Maulana Abdul Batin Nomani said: “The district administration not only placed idols in it overnight but also involved the deployed CRPF, in whose functioning everyone had faith, in this conspiracy.”
On Jan 31, the district judge’s court sanctioned the worship of deities inside the southern cellar of the mosque by priests designated by Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust. Responding promptly, the district administration ensured compliance with the court order the same day.
“This one-sided action of the district judge and district administration has hurt the sentiments of all of us, and we strongly condemn this decision of the court,” Nomani said.
In response to the ruling, AIM had called for a Banaras bandh on Feb 2 as a peaceful protest. It also appealed to Muslims nationwide to offer special prayers in mosques. AIM expressed gratitude to all the people for their support, saying: “We have full hope that we will receive the same support in the future.”
