Fifty Fifty makes a comeback with new single “Perfect Crime,” marking their maiden original release this year, following their Love Tune: Rewired (Remixes) album in January.
A pre-release track from their upcoming EP, Day and Night—set for release on April 29—the song once again highlights Fifty Fifty’s multilingualism, forging a deeper connection with fans and listeners worldwide.
“Perfect Crime” draws from the band’s signature sound, rife with R&B influences, disco-pop, and synth-pop elements, while also circling back to their “lover-girl” roots.
From the megahit “Cupid,” off their debut single album, The Beginning: Cupid—redolent of youth and a first crush—to “SOS” from their second mini album, Love Tune, which is a more nuanced exploration into the multiple layers of love, Fifty Fifty continues to dissect the meaning of love through their music.
Following suit, “Perfect Crime” dives into the emotional landscape of love and longing, capturing the tension between desire, anxiety and anticipation that come with a relationship. Rhythmically a slow-paced number, its synth-driven sound and bluesy beauty grow with the quintet adding their solid vocals and harmonies to the mix.
Just like the synthesized soundscapes from the 1980s, the tune also has a contemporary edge, which serves to emphasize its central theme: “the push and pull of waiting for someone who always seems just out of reach,” according to a press statement.
The retro vibe and reverb-drenched singing add to the song’s dreaminess while the layering of vocal harmonies deepen the emotional impact of the lyrics.
“Perfect Crime”, in essence, brings a freshness to the sound of retro-pop while firmly holding on to something that remains at the beating heart of Fifty Fifty’s music—emotional and meaningful storytelling.
The song is now available across all digital streaming platforms via Arista Records. Listen to the group’s other hits here.
